To find the insects associated with seeds of a Brazilian native leguminous plant, Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus Hassl., fruits were collected from isolated trees in Tres Barras, Parana, Brazil. A sample of 500 g of fruits with 2353 seeds was evaluated in the laboratory. It was found that 77.4% of the seeds were not damaged by insects, 12.4% of the seeds were damaged and 10.2% of the seeds were empty. The bruchid species Ctenocolum crotonae (Fåhraeus) was detected for the first time in this plant. This species was recorded in Mato Grosso, Brazil and, in this paper, the geographical distribution is amplified to include Parana State. Horismenus missouriensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was also observed in the sample and it is probably a parasitoid of the... |

Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are nectar-secreting glands not directly involved with pollination which may occur on virtually all above-ground plant parts of angiosperms. Recent studies revealed that such glands are widely distributed amongst the woody flora of the Brazilian cerrados. Plants bearing EFNs are visited day and night by a diverse assemblage of nectarivorous ants. In this review we present the data gathered during the past 15 years on the interaction between ants and EFN-bearing plants in cerrado vegetation. Field experiments indicate that ants visiting EFNs may prey or attack insect herbivores on the plant foliage, significantly reducing herbivore damage to leaves, buds or flowers. As a response, some herbivore species have developed an array... |

Loyolanthidium gen. n. (type species: Anthidium apicale Cresson, 1878) is proposed to accommodate the western hemisphere species hitherto placed by the authors in Anthidiellum Cockerell, 1904. Three new species are described: Loyolanthidium bolivianum sp. n. (from Bolívia), Loyolanthidium azteca sp. n. and Loyolanthidium xilitlense sp. n. (both from México). The following nomenclatural changes are introduced: Loyolanthidium apicale (Cresson, 1878) comb. n. = Anthidium albopilosum Friese, 1910 syn. n. = Anthidium auricolle Friese, 1921 syn. n.; Loyolanthidium ehrhorni (Cockerell, 1900) comb, n.; Loyolanthidium gilense (Cockerell, 1897) comb, n.; Loyolanthidium notatum (Latreille, 1809) comb, n.; Loyolanthidium perplexum (Smith, 1854) comb, n.;... |

Three methods of division of Melipona quadrifasciata Lep. colonies were evaluated: fisogastric queen naturally mated; orphans colonies, and queen mated in laboratory. Out of six colonies, five had grade 7 in 221 days, reaching 83,3% of success, in the 1st method. Out of four, 100% were formed using the 2nd method, in 221 days, and 71,4% out of seven colonies were formed with grade 7 in 195 days using the 3rd method. All colonies were treated with Syrup-A; the same management and same system of evaluation. Colonies obtained were described performance by the following mathematic models: Grade1 = 1.202 + 0.262 x reading; Grade2 = 1.474 + 0.250 x reading and Grade3 = 1.406 + 0.287 x reading. The 3rd method was the best considering time of the colonies... |

Inclui representantes de Aphelinidae, Bethylidae, Braconidae, Elasmidae, Encyrtidae, Eulophidae, Eupelmidae, Eurytomidae, Mymaridae, Platygastridae, Pteromalidae, Scelionidae, Tanaostigmatidae, Torymidae e Signophoridae, totalizando 15 famílias. Esses micro-himenópteros estão associados com 45 espécies de plantas... |

This paper reports the occurrence of parasitoids in pupae of flies (Diptera) collected from several different substrata in Itumbiara, Goiás, Brazil. The pupae were isolated by flotation. They were individually placed into gelatin capsules and kept until the emergency of adult flies or their parasitoids. From March 2001 through April 2002, a total of 684 parasitoids and 830 pupae of flies were collected from humans feces, chicken viscera, fish, and bovine kidney. Brachymeria podagrica were identified in a high number of samples. The prevalence of parasitism was of 82.4%. |

The species of parasitoids associated with Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) collected in human feces, cattle liver, chicken viscera, cattle dung, chicken manure and food leftovers in Itumbiara, State of Goiás, Brazil, from July 1999 to July 2003, were studied. The pupae were obtained by the flotation method. They were individually placed in gelatin capsules until the emergence of the adult flies or their parasitoids. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 0.7%. The most frequent species was Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), accounting for 35.4%. |

This work reports the occurrence of microhimenopterous in cattle dung in Itumbiara, Goiás, Brazil. Cattle dung pats were exposed on a pasture for 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 192, 216 and 240 hours and were then separately taken to the laboratory for artropods extraction. A total of 100 dung pats were exposed at pasture. The pupae were individually placed in transparent gelatin capsules until the emergence of the parasitoids. The main species of parasitoids collected from bovine dung were Paraganapis egeria and Spalangia drosophilae. |
